_cloverfield + no country for old men + jessica lucas!

cloverfield.

i’m going to begin this short review by piggybacking off of a Reviewsion review. i echo many of Janelle’s thoughts… pretty well shot. very interesting choice of POV, solid thematic elements (whatever that means) and it had some scary, creepy moments. it’s not gonna change your life. one of my biggest knocks against is that it’s one of those movies where 10 minutes away from the theater you become overwhelmed with “wtf?”s and “how did that happen?!”s (i find myself confuzzled more and more by movies like this).

okay, so it’s a monster movie.

i don’t think that’s a spoiler; one can easily reach that conclusion by reading an advert. so, with that being said, it’s certain that much of what the viewer is in store for is going to be moderately implausible, on it’s face. however, the thing that tears a plot of fantasy to shred, for me, is incongruity. supernatural occurences totally unrelated to what’s SUPPOSED to be supernatural- id est, a central character surviving a violent attack by hungry monsters, while less important- but perhaps more defensively well equipped- characters die instantaneously and ignominiously. or, monsters quickly dispatching extras and secondary characters quickly but licking their chops and dramatically surveying their central character-prey.

it’s (part of) what dissappointed me with I Am Legend. a litany of such exists in cloverfield.

if you can stomach that, and the ANNOYING ASS CHARACTER DIALOGUE, which admittedly wasn’t too hard to do, the movie has some great moments. as my boy said, good date movie.

three stars. the monster, altho only revealed in glimpses, was pretty cool.

no country for old men.

wow!!!

what a great movie. the ending was disappointing, but the execution throughout was fantastic. i thought tommy lee jones’ (MAN is he ugly) ruminations got verbose at times, but hoooowee! (in best texas accent) that’s darn tootin’ good shootin! *slaps knee*

got a rude surprise in that movie too. a couple actually. fantastic. if you haven’t seen it, please do.

_the man with no arms.

these pics are actually from last year, but i think they need to be seen.

there was a guy that used to live around my way. he was about 5 feet tall even, and he had no arms. he was very strange.

anyway, after leaving the barbershop late one night, i happened to see this fellow outside of the bar next door, yelling something about needing a drink in slurred speech, completely shirtless.

i took pics. enjoy.

(sorry they’re blurry– treos have suckass cameras)
